Eli was a curious and adventurous boy. We live across the street from Eli and from time to time he made his way over for a little jaunt and visit with our 5 year old female mixed breed, Meli. As Eli slowly walked up the driveway, Meli would sound the alert! She'd look at me and then back at Eli then at me, until I came to see what she was trying to tell me. Meli seemed to sense that Eli wasn't up for any rough play as she was content to stand nearby, curiously watching as Eli continued his sojourn. Not long into his visits, Eli’s parents would come over and apologetically escort him back home. There was no need to apologize. It was, in fact, nice for Meli to have a visitor, especially one who she remained calm around. Sadly, Meli has a very weak ACL joint and can easily injure her knee when running around. For this reason she can’t play with other dogs. But Eli was the exception. One morning Meli's barking was particularly insistent. When I looked into the matter, I found Eli in the garage. To my surprise, despite his vision loss, he had successfully discovered and was in the process of enthusiastically devouring a block of bird suet! I informed Eli's Mom about what he'd eaten as I was concerned he would suffer from an upset stomach. From then on the suet cakes were stored out of Eli’s reach! Sadly, after wandering too far from home one day last winter, Eli's visits ended. I’m certain Meli misses her handsome caller. May he run free over the rainbow bridge and forever Rest In Love. ️
