On Friday(15th) Jess, Kristin and I went down to Paw Prints Forever and saw our precious boy Grayson for the last time. They brought him to a private viewing room and laid him on a doggie bed and had a blanket over him. He looked at peace, like he was just sleeping, and as much as I wanted him to open those beautiful golden eyes of his, wag his tail, and lick my face, that was not to be. We were able to see him, touch him, kiss him, and say goodbye. I then was able to witness them place him in the chamber. I sat vigil during Grayson's cremation while Jess took Kristin to a nearby playground. Grayson now rests in a box urn on our mantle in our family room, where he loved to sleep in the Big Chair, or most especially on the Sleepy Couch where he passed away Sunday morning(10th). This has been a tremendously difficult, stressful, and heartbreaking time, from his illness manifesting itself just under 2 months ago, to his ups and downs during treatment, to his passing and the excruciating pain of that morning and the emptiness felt in our hearts and our home since. However, going to see him today, saying goodbye for the last time, and being there throughout the process, was cathartic and strangely enough made me turn around and look forward for the first time in recent memory, to the day when we will open our home to another little wayward soul with fur and four legs that we can rescue and give a forever home full of love and joy. Until we meet again, my precious boy, run free. I love you Grayson. Thank you for bringing your love and spirit into our home and into our hearts. ************************************************************************ Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
