Rocky

1988 – 2023

Rocky was born about July 11th, 1988 in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.

I did not know about him until one day in September 1988 when I walked into a pet store and I been thinking about getting a pet parrot. When I came across this six week old little green parrot I fell in love with it. I found it he was an Amazon Spectacle Parrot (White Front) so I decided to get him and the little cage that he was in. When I got him home I decided to name him Rocky after the movie as it just seem to fit him. It took several months before I could gain his trust and get him to go jump on my hand and then not long after I was able to get him to walk up to my right shoulder which ultimately was his favorite spot when I held him. I let him out of the cage all the time as long as I was around and when he wanted me to hold him he would bounce up and down and flap his wings and I always had a hard time not to go over and hold him. Everyday when I was going to work I use to tell him “Rocky I have to go to work and you are in charge, I love you, be a good boy”. When I came home from work I would say as I came near the door before I opened it “Rocky I am home” and when I came in the first thing he would do was go from his top perch and down to his feed bowl and start eating as he liked to eat mainly when I was around. The first I would do is take his cage and bring him in the living close to where I sat and then get him fresh water and then I would get him his dinner appetizer which usually was some shelled peanuts, popcorn, potato chips and sometimes lettuce and or carrots. Then when dinner came Rocky ate what I ate. He looked forward to what we were having each night and what I would do is take his bowl out put some bread on top and then give whatever I was having that night, but I never gave him meat, poultry or fish. His favorite dinners was either pizza or spaghetti and he also really love corn on the cob, it was cute when he ate that sometimes the half eaten kernels would stick on the outside of his beak and he looked funny. Sometimes I would sing him a song which he liked “Rocky is my buddy, Rocky is my friend, Rocky is my buddy, Rocky is my best friend”.  Another funny thing was his favorite toy, which was not the expensive parrot toys that I got him for his birthday or Christmas, it was like empty cardboard spaghetti box or an egg carton even a toilet paper roll, he would spend hours tearing it apart, it made a mess but if he was enjoying himself that was all that mattered.

I really loved that little bird and I really believe he loved me also. We went through a lot together and he will always have a “special” place in my heart.
